The Prague Petrin funicular railway links the Mala Strana district (Lesser Town) with the top of Petrin
hill. There are 3 stops: Ujezd (at the bottom of the hill), Nebozizek
(the middle station) and Petrin (at the top of the hill).
Opened in 1891 with a length of 383 metres, the original line was
closed with the start of the first world war in 1914 . The current
longer line opened in 1932 with completely new equipment, and operated
throughout the second world war. After an earth movement in 1965 the
service was suspended until 1985 when new cars were provided but with
the original machinery.
The electric funicular is 510 meters long, 130 meters high and has
maximum gradient of 29.5%. there are 2 cars each with the capacity of
100 passengers.

Prague is the hub of the Czech railway system, with services to all parts of the Czech Republic and abroad.
There are in Prague 2 international railway stations, Hlavni
nadrazi (the main railway station) and Praha-Holesovice station. There
are also other smaller intercity and suburban stations.
Prague has also ferry transport on the Vltava river operating since July 2007. The ferry takes people from Smichov district to Podoli and back daily from 6:00 to 22:00
You can get on board with a regular valid ticket or a long-term
ticket. Children under 6 years old and bikes are transported for free.

Taxi services in Prague is divided into three sectors. There are
major taxicab companies, operating call-for-taxi services (radio-taxi)
or from regulated taxi stands, in this case overpricing is rare. There
are independent drivers who pick-up customers on the street; cheating
is mostly associated with these cars.
The problem with overcharging is so huge, it was even mentioned in Lonely Planet guide and featured on CNN. We advice tourists taking taxi in Prague to be very careful, request a receipt and make sure to know the approximate amount to be charged before entering the car.

Old Town of Prague (Stare Mesto in Czech) is the original settlement of
Prague since the 9th Century, it's separated from the rest of the the
town by Revolucni, na Prikope and Narodni streets and connected to the Vltava River from both sides.
It's composed of two parts: The Old Town Square and the Lesser Town at the other side of the Vltava, bothe parts are connected by Charles Bridge.

Located between Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square,
the Old Town Square of Prague is famous for its Astronomical Clock, the
Tower of the Old Town Hall which offers a great view of the Town. There
are also in the Old Town Square many great monuments in different
architectural styles, the baroque St. Nicholas Church and the gothic
Tyn Cathedral.
Many celebrations are taking place in The Old Town Square, New Year's
celebrations, Easter or Christmas markets. It's also a meeting place
for footbal and hockey fansand travellers who can watch live games of
big screens.

Named Lesser as per its location on the left bank of the Vltava river below the Prague Castle.
In the Middle Ages Nobles and German civilians of Prague used to live
in the Lesser Town when Bourgeois and Bohemian Czech lived at the
right-bank of the river (the Old Town Square).
Many monuments are located in the Lesser Town like the Neruda Street named after the Czech novelist Jan Neruda,
the Petrin Tower and churches all dominated by the Baroque
architecture. Simply the Mala Strana desearves the title "A Pearl of
Baroque Architecture."

The construction of Charles Bridge (Karluv Most in Czech) started in 1357 by King Charles IV and lasted till the 15th century.
It used to be the only bridge over the Vltava River that connects both sides of the Old Town and Prague Castle .
Charles Bridge also played main role in making Prague important trade route between Eastern and Western Europe.
At the beginning the bridge was called the Stone Bridge or also Prague Bridge and by 1870 Charles Bridge.
Charles
Bridge is 516 meters long and 10 meters wide, resting on 16 arches.
There are three towers protecting Charles Bridge, two of them on the Lesser Town side and the third one on the Old Town side. There are also 30 baroque-style statues decorating the bridge.
During the day Charles Bridge gets busy with artists, painters, musicians and crowded with thousands of tourists. During the sunset and night, the bridge looks more romantic and reminds medieval times.
Prague National Theatre (Narodni Divadlo in Czech) is one of the main monuments of Czech history and art.
Built between 1868 and 1881 by the architect Josef Zitek,
Prague National Theatre was mostly destroyed by fire in it's first year
of existence and it was reconstructed by the architect Josef Schulz in
1883.
Today the National Theatre consists of three artistic ensembles –
opera, ballet and drama – which alternate in their performances in the
historic building of the National Theatre, in the Theatre of the
Estates and in the Kolowrat Theatre. All three artistic ensembles
select their repertoire not only from the rich classical heritage, but
in addition to local authors they focus their attention on modern world
output.
For more information please visit the official website of Prague National Theatre.
The National Museum is located in the Wenceslas Square and was founded by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg
in 1818 to exhibit natural and historical collections. Today the
National Museum contains around 14 million items of history, arts,
natural history, and music.
The main departments and collection of the Museum are: the Department
of Prehistory and Protohistory, Classical Archeology, Ethnography,
Numismatics and Department of Theater.

The
name Vinohrady (in English literally "vineyards") is from the fact that
the area was once covered in vineyards dating from the 14th century.
Vinohrady covers the municipal and administrative Districts of Prague 2, Prague 3 and Prague 10.
From 1867 to 1968, the name of Vinohrady used to be Kralovske Vinohrady ("Royal Vineyards"). In 1922, Vinohrady became part of Prague. Because it was considered as a "bourgeois" district and politically unreliable, the Communists divided Vinohrady into different municipal districts in 1949.
The
Vltava ( Moldau in German) is the longest river in the Czech Republic,
running north from its source in Sumava through Cesky Krumlov , Ceske
Budejovice , and Prague, merging with the Elbe (Labe) at Melnik.
It is 430 kilometers long and drains about 28,090 square kilometers; at
their confluence the Vltava actually has more water than the Elbe, but
joins the Elbe at a right angle to its flow so that it appears a mere
tributary.
Several dams were built on it in the 1950s, the biggest being Lipno Dam in Sumava.

The Czech Koruna has been the currency of the Czech Republic since the
8th of February 1993 when it replaced the Czechoslovak koruna. The
meaning of koruna in English is "crown".
The official name in Czech is koruna ceska (the plural form is koruny
ceske, but the genitive plural form korun ceskych is usually found on
banknotes). The ISO 4217 code is CZK and the local acronym is Kc, which
is placed after the numeric value (e.g., "200 Kc"). One koruna equals
100 haleru (abbreviated as "h", singular: haler, nominative plural:
halere).
The Czech Republic can adopt the Euro in 2019 but still not a fixed term.
In most of supermarkets, shops and restaurants you can pay in Euro but don't expect to get a good exchange rate.
For exchanging money better if you check the best rate in the exchange
offices and carefully with the commission rates, most of them show 0%
commission but in the end they charge you a commission so ask firmly
for the exact amount that you will get. Banks will usually charge you
such commission.
