Number of tourists in Prague, has plummeted and that's due to several
factors, in addition to the economic crisis when people refuse to spend
more, there is the increase in the price of certain services and the
bad behavior toward tourists of uneducated Czechs working in the
tourism field. As a reaction, Prague wants to promote a new Internet
portal, which offers tourists information about entertainment and
cultural events held in Prague.
Domestic revenue from foreign tourism last year fell in comparison to
2007. Foreigners spent in the Czech Republic almost 130 billion crowns
during 2008, 3.3 billion less than in 2007, this according to a leading
analytical company Mag Consulting. The loss of tourists, which is the
first time since last floods in 2002 and the length of stay of foreign
tourists in the Czech Republic is still shortened when the vast
majority of them are heading to Prague.
The number of foreign tourists in the Czech Republic was reduced to an
average of eight to ten percent. Last year 6.65 million toursists
visited the Czech Republic, hotels mostly suffered from such drop, but
still are opening new hotels in the centre of Prague to increase the
capacity of hotels in Prague to 7.9 percent since 2000, according to
the Czech Statistical Office. The increase in arrivals was four percent
in 2008 according to Czech Tourism, mainly in the three star hotel
category. Capacity remains unused, the state of the financial crisis
deepens and between hotels the fight continues mainly on price, add to
that the new trend of apartments in Prague which offer more space,
better prices and more convenient solution for families.
Hotels have also a serious problem: tourists are no longer spending as
it used to be few years ago. Because of the economic crisis, people are
more cautious in spending for food and drink. Recently, they are
moreover focusing on cheaper services, for example not buying expensive
souvenirs and going to cheaper restaurants.
New information portal Prague
Prague hoteliers are also active in the fight against the crisis. One
of the innovations to promote tourism is Prague Events Calendar, a
portal clearly informing tourists about events held in Prague.
The Portal was officially launched on the 25th of March. It is used for
better orientation in Prague events, however it has become an
important tool for decision-making for potential tourists. Prague
Events Calendar aim is to support the attendance of Prague.
